Dong Quai

Dong Quai is a native plant in China. Its scientific name is Angleica Sinensis. In Chinese it is pronouanced as dang gui. Dong Quai is part of Apiaceae family. It has nice green leaves, and blossoms into tiny white flowers like umbrella. Dong Quai's root is brown and fleshy.

Chinese people regard dong quai as gingsen for females. It is widely used as supplements by Chinese women to help with gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia and high blood pressure. Dong quai has many of health-improving properties. It is rich in Vitamins A, B3, B12, C, E, and also has high content of minerals such as Calcium, iron, zinc, sodium, magnesium, and volatile oil etc.

Back to almost a centuary ago some European scientists studied the effects of dong quai with a group of selected female subjects. They found that the women who were given the liquid extracts of dong quai root on daily basis reported their premenstrual and menstrual pains were reduced and menstrual flow was induced smoothly. Scientists agreed that dong quai could serve as uterine tonic and hormonal regulator, and therefore is a helpful supplement for female reproductive system.

In the market Dong Quai is usually found as tablets, concentrated granules, liquid extracts, or raw root slices. In Chinese medicine, dong quai root is often boiled or soaked in wine. They usually drink such liquid.

Pleaes note dong quai is NOT recommended for pregnant women because of its hormonal, anticoagulant, and anti-platelet characteristics. Chinese medicine thinks Dong quai could increase the risk of miscarriage. Please consult your herbal practitioner for usage advise.
